This necklace consists of seven square units and two parallelograms at the ends, making up a total of nine. Common to each is a depiction of pairs of two different birds, the peacock and the parrot. Both of them are often used as a vehicle by the Lord of desire, Kamadeva. The parrot was believed to be a rain-bringer, hence a symbol of fertility. When riding a peacock, Kama is said to represent impatient desire. Significantly hanging below the necklace can be seen small ghungroo bells. Indeed it is believed that the charming tinkle of these small ghungroos elicits an appropriate erotic response in men.
