When god Brahma, occupying the highest position in the hierarchy of creation, was meditating, there arose a sound from the sky-like vacuum of his heart. This sound is perceptible even when the sense of hearing is closed. It is by concentrating on this sound that yogis wipe out all impurities of the mind and attain liberation.

From that nada (sound), arose the sacred syllable OM which consists of three matras (a,u,m) the source of which is physically unmanifest, but shines (manifests) itself in the heart of yogis. The Supreme Soul, known as Brahman or Paramatma, is realized by OM. (Shrimad Bhagavata Purana 12.6.37-39)
