The Buddha Maitreya is the Buddhist equivalent of the Hindu Kalki. A Buddha who is yet to arrive in ihaloka and revive the resident mortals, He is the Ajeeta of the Amitabha and the Lotus Sootras. The thangka that you see on this page depicts Maitreya in all His futuristic glory. Interestingly, He is the only deity in the Hindu-Buddhist pantheon who sits with His legs pendant (as opposed to in lalitasana or padmasana).
Against the background of a richly detailed landscape, Buddha Maitreya sits on a throne of marble strewn with lotuses. Clouds formed of generous brushstrokes in the heavens. Dense, compact canopies dotting the left arc of His throne; leafy, lotus-strewn overgrowth along the right. Ferocious lions at His feet, looking up at Him in reverence. From the dharmachakra mudra of His hands emerge mythical flora blooming with strange blue lotuses and vessels made of gold.
Beneath the jewel-studded parasol and the wisp of pristine silk, the face of Maitreya glows with calm and wisdom. Note the subtle gradient of the green-coloured halo. A thicker shade of the same colour is to be found in the higher skies, amidst which float delicate clouds of gold.
