The growth of objective pictures of birds and animals during the 16th - 17th century reflect the passion of the Mughal emperors for nature and wild life.

Here, the emphasis has been laid on the representation of the typical features of the cheetah and these are depicted so realistically so as to enable one to distinguish its species. To achieve this, the artist must have seen the animal closely and many times as his creation is not merely the likeness of external appearances but a truthful portrayal of its mood as well. However, the focus of the artist's attention seems to have moved restlessly; some areas convey the massing of the animal and even the texture of its fur e.g. the tail, while the description of the hind legs and paws is abbreviated, emblematic rather than literal. The cheetah's spots take on a life of their own, becoming pure pattern. They are realistically placed and spaced. One ear projected up gives it a very alert appearance. The eyes and the line depicting the mouth speak for the ferocious nature of the animal. The paws are drawn in a way to give the viewers an idea of its lithe, swift movement.

Considering the wild nature of the animal, the background should show wilderness or dense forests. Contrary to that, it is painted in flat, green color with mounds and shrubs. An occasional tree can be seen in the distance. There is, however, no indication of the sky either by color or by line.

This painting is calligraphically decorated on two sides.
