A rich cap covers his head and he wears a yellow dress, tied at the waist and green tight trousers. The flat features and chubby cheeks give the child a heightened sense of innocence, and the figure seems to come alive.
A lot of shading is done to achieve the effect of folds in the clothes. The tonality of the vibrant and warm colours, particularly the yellow and orange, are scintillating. They are applied in a flat manner as is the background in flat deep green. It is plain and kept so for reasons best known to the artist. A natural background would have added effect and liveliness to the portrait. The fruit seems superficially placed in the lap. In fact, most things in this painting are depicted in a rather stiff and naive manner.
