In this batik work using brilliant colours, we see a solid, concrete shape of the Linga occupying the central position in the worship of Shiva. The black Linga decorated with colourful flowers also sports the symbol 'Aum'. The Linga is symbolically understood as the embodiment of the five elements ether, air, fire, water and earth. The Linga here is surrounded by a ferocious looking cobra the round eyes without lids and the fangs contribute to the fierce looks. But Shiva is profusely associated with the serpents as they represent his sexual energy or Kundalini. In the iconic images of Shiva, the serpents find a place of honour, appearing on the head of Shiva or as garlands around his neck.
The artist seems a devout Shaivite, going by the theme. And going by the colour palette, he seems to have a commendable colour combination sense. The focal point, the Linga is coal black, surround by earth colours showing the inner and outer body of the snake. The outer concentric circle is made of lotus petals in Indian pink colour. The background to all this is subdued neon green, not clashing with any colour used within.
