Seetatara, or White Tara, is the Buddhist equivalent of the Hindu Devi Sarasvati. Like Sarasvati, She is fair and lissome, almost willowy. The thangka that you see on this page captures the classical iconography of the Buddhist Goddess Tara and bears all the hallmarks of the traditional authentic thangka.
The delicate-limbed White Tara is possessed of two arms, long and slender and sinewy. There is a third golaka (organ) of vision on Her brow, and one each on the palms of Her hands and the soles of Her feet. Half-shut, pouring forth with the treasures of prolonged contemplation. On Her pristine, living, breathing lotus-like form, the artisan has thrown over a world of green and ochre silks. Buddha Amitabha nestles on a miniscule blue lotus at the base of White Tara’s crown.
The rest of the thangka comprises a perfectly symmetrical landscape (Buddhist heavens). A colour palette of rich and deep pastels brings out the complexion of Seetatara.
