The painting shows Guru Nanak chanting the name of the Supreme Being with the aid of a rosary. With his head bent at an angle, he also listens to Mardana, his Muslim disciple who accompanied Nanak far and wide. Mardana is singing Nanak's bani in praise of God. He holds an instrument, a variation of the ruhbab.
The artist has tried to achieve perspective, alas! without success. Mardana is painted larger to show closeness to the viewer and Guru Nanak smaller, to depict distance. The artist has also used sharply contrasting colours of green and pink. The background is beige with a thin line of red running horizontally across, depicting the skyline.
