The painting that you see on this page captures every almost aspect of tribal life. The twin central panels are like the doors of an ancient temple thrown open. Each of the series of colourful stick figures (highly characteristic of Warli) depict an aspect of tribal social life. Wedding procession, returning to the village with a fresh catch of fish, hunting and gathering, cop-picking and husbandry, and - most importantly - dancing and celebration next to a limpid river, to which the largest panels at the bottom have been dedicated. In the panels that flank the aforementioned ones, there is more gathering and feasting and dancing around the tree of life. It is of note how important the presence of animals is in the daily life of this gentle tribe.
This is an eclectic composition in terms of symmetry and colour ration. Despite the asymmetry, it exudes great harmony. Also, the predominance of thick black lines, with a controlled infusion of colour, makes this an expressive painting.
