Phad
is a style of scroll art that depicts intricate religious narratives about
local deities and gods. These traditional paintings, created as traveling or
mobile temples, were carried by Rabari priest-singers known as Bhopas and
Bhopis, who would sing and perform songs about their local deities. This King
and Queen in Swing are a traditional Phad Painting by Kalyan Joshi. Natural
pigment colors are used to embellish the paper with gorgeous images of the king
(Pabuji) and queen (Phulvanti) swinging happily. The red background, combined
with black, white, and gold paint to show the human figures and flora, brings
out the best in this painting, making it an ideal choice for a regal wall.
