Phad painting is
thought to have started in Shahpura in the 14th century when it was only
practiced by members of the Chhipa caste. This was also the time when the local
folk stories, or veergatha, recorded by these scrolls first appeared. Kalyan
Josi's King on Horse Ride is a traditional Phad painting created on paper with
natural paints. It shows the local king riding on a horse while his attendant
fanned him from behind. Flora and fauna are clearly shown utilizing traditional
patterns and colors. This picture, with its deep-rotted symbology, is a
one-of-a-kind complement to any home decor that seeks a traditional aesthetic.
