This
magnificent Tanjore painting is full of bliss in the way Lord Shiva and His
eternal consort Goddess Parvati have been portrayed. The Lord is the
predominating deity of Tamo Guna (mode of ignorance) and is thus responsible
for the destruction of the material world.
Just like heat cannot be separated from the fire, likewise, Lord Shiva
is incomplete without Parvati, His internal potency.
Lord Shiva is seated in lalitasana on his divine mount Nandi (the sacred bull) who is decorated with a cloth on his back and chains of rings around his neck. The lord is clad in a dhoti made of tiger’s skin and a serpent is coiled around his neck. He is also unprecedently ornamented with several jewels and a crown on his head. Next to him, Goddess Parvati is seated calmly who is attired in beautiful saree. Her body complexion is green resembling the fresh leaves that spring during the autumn season. They are surrounded by a huge Kirtimukham Prabhavali at the back which is pleasing to the eyes. Two devotees standing on the ground, devotedly fan the lord and the goddess with a chamar. From the sky, two denizens blissfully shower flowers upon them in order to glorify them. Every bit of this painting has been precisely embellished with pure gold coating studded with sequences of shining stones along the outlines which is the characteristic feature of Tanjore artwork.
