Against the deep black of the paralokiya (otherworldly) skies, Devi Mahishasuramardini battles the mighty Mahishasura. He is the mightiest of the asura race, blessed by Lord Brahma Himself to never suffer defeat in the hands of another male; while She is the invincible female, birthed by the most powerful devas of devaloka for the very purpose of putting an end (‘vadha’) to Mahishasura. The painting that you see on this page captures the all-powerful Devi in the moment of victory - She drives the spear straight into His heart, incapacitating Him and His adharma forever.
There is much about this painting that is characteristic of the patti art of Odisha. First and foremost, the canvas is an authentic patti, the handmade variety of canvas that gives the folk art form its name. Then there is the vibrant colour palette - the scarlet saree of Devi Durga, the golden robes of the king of asuras, and the architecture prevailing in the background. A series of miniature panels underneath the main panel, featuring Lord Ganesha, Devi Lakshmi, and Devi Sarasvati, who are the children She had with Lord Shiva.
This patta painting is a fine example of the pattachitra tradition of devotional art. Zoom in on the expressive mukhamandala of Devi Durga, the beauty of its composure set off by an ornate gold crown. The delicate shape of each of the dashabhuja (ten arms), each of which bears the weapons the devas blessed Her with. Finally, the star-spangled night-sky that brings out the vivid colours of the foreground.
