Rahu and Ketu are frequently mentioned together as they form the head and tail respectively of the same danava. The story of Ketu's origin states that while the gods were sharing the nectar after the churning of the ocean, one demon got mingled with the god's adopting their guise. Surya and Chandra realized his trickery and brought it to Vishnu's notice, who hacked off his head with his Sudarshan Chakra. But by that time, the demon had nectar in his throat, so his head and trunk remained independently alive, the latter called the dragon's tail or Ketu. At the time of the eclipse, Ketu is believed to be swallowing the sun out of animosity.
Here we see Ketu standing on a coiled serpent, holding a beheaded face in a hand, looking quite malevolent.
