In the heart of Kailash, auspiciousness and eternal bliss find a home in the company of Shiva and his divine family, a group of opposing yet mutually connected divinities, whose together symbolize the Hindu ideal of a perfect family. On handmade paper using watercolors, the artist has created a hushed background with white mountain tops, against which appears Shiva, as if bathed in a constant shower of moonlight.

With one leg placed on the lotus pedestal and the other on the ground, Shiva seems to be dancing, with his children- Ganesha and Kartikeya in his lap, both overjoyed by the embrace of their father. Seeing this Lila of Shiva, the Lord of three realms playing with his son, the inhabitants of Kailasha- Nandi and Simha (lion, mount of Parvati) appear in awe, gazing in surprise and adoration at Mahadeva.

Blissed, goddess Parvati in her four-armed form as the supreme mother or Jagadamba, claps her hands- her happiness giving rise to the spring-like mood of Nature (Prakriti, who is an aspect of Parvati). Seated at the top of Shiva’s locks, Ganga’s heart fills with happiness as she witnesses this divine bliss, her joy causing a spurt of water that falls on Ganesha’s head, sprinkling it with her blessings.

A Divine Tapestry: The Shiva Parivar Pattachitra

This exquisite Pattachitra painting, hailing from the vibrant artistic tradition of Odisha, India, depicts the sacred Shiva Parivar – the family of Lord Shiva. Rendered in the meticulous watercolor style characteristic of Pattachitra art, this piece is a vibrant celebration of Hindu mythology and the divine family. The painting captures the essence of the deities, their expressions, and their relationship with remarkable detail and spiritual depth. The use of natural pigments lends a luminosity and rich texture to the artwork, making it a stunning addition to any space. The 18-inch height and 12-inch width ensure this piece commands attention without overwhelming a room. The handmade canvas adds to its authentic and unique character, a testament to the artistry and tradition behind its creation.

The Mythology of Shiva and his Family

Lord Shiva, the Destroyer and Transformer within the Hindu trinity (Trimurti), is depicted here in his majestic form. He is accompanied by his consort, Parvati (also known as Shakti, the Divine Mother), whose gentle demeanor balances Shiva's powerful presence. Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and remover of obstacles, affectionately sits at Shiva’s side, a symbol of auspicious beginnings and the overcoming of challenges. Kartikeya (Murugan or Skanda), the god of war, completes the divine family, representing courage and victory. The Nandi, Shiva's sacred bull, rests faithfully below, representing devotion and strength. The painting's backdrop of snow-capped mountains, often associated with Shiva's abode on Mount Kailash, further enhances the mystical and spiritual atmosphere. Mount Kailash itself is a revered location in several spiritual traditions, adding a layer of cultural and religious significance to the artwork. The Pattachitra style's narrative approach allows the viewer to deeply engage with the story and mythology behind each figure.

The Art of Pattachitra: A Living Tradition

Pattachitra, meaning "picture on cloth" in Odia, is an ancient art form that has been passed down through generations in Odisha. The tradition is rooted in the creation of religious scrolls, narrating stories from Hindu epics and puranas. This technique involves the meticulous application of natural colors on finely woven cotton canvas. The distinctive style is characterized by its bright and bold colors, detailed depictions, and expressive figures. Artisans meticulously prepare the canvas, applying layers of chalk before carefully painting the imagery, often using a distinctive style of brushstrokes and flat perspective. The elaborate detailing and ornamental borders, like those present in this painting, are common features of Pattachitra art. Buying this painting is not only acquiring a piece of art, but also supporting a living artistic tradition. By showcasing such pieces, we contribute to the preservation of Odisha's rich cultural heritage.
