Renouncing his privileged existence to seek the truth about human suffering, Shakyamuni Buddha, also called Siddhartha Gautama, was born into a royal family. In Bodh Gaya, India, under the Bodhi tree, Siddharta achieved enlightenment following years of austere living.
He preached the four Noble truths as the Buddha, or "awakened one," focusing on the nature of suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the eightfold path that leads to liberation. Buddhist philosophy is based on his teachings, which are preserved in the Tripitaka or Pali Canon. He leads followers toward a well-rounded and conscious life through wisdom, compassion, and the middle way.
