The numerous tala vadya or chordophones are of various kinds which can be traced to primitive cultures. They are classified into polychords on monochords. The monochords may be plucked or bowed. Violin is one supreme example of the bowed instrument. The violin here looks as good as it would sound. It has the sound box above and the fingerboard below. The wood used on the surface and the sides is different, suggestive by the different colours. Sometimes, different colours co-relate with musical functions. Whatever can be seen here in golden paint is metallic. The closely laid chords run from one end to another. The shape of the violin differs in relation to local forms e.g. Ravana hasta veena of Rajasthan and Gujarat, the kings of Andhra Pradesh etc. The finest thing about a violin is that though it has many strings, a single string can produce a whole melody. This violin has an appendage in the form of a stick with a single cord with which one plays on the strings of the main instrument. The play of two strings produce a melodious sound and that makes it more unique than the plucked monochords.
