Lakshmi-Varaha (goddess Lakshmi accompanying Vishnu in his boar or Varaha roopa) is an auspicious form, worshipped by Vaishnavas as a reminder of the protection that the mighty preserver Lord extends to his children. Saving the Earth from the depths of the ocean, Varaha restored balance in the universe and annihilated the demon Hiranyakasha. In this bronze icon, he is represented as a divine sovereign, beautifully adorned and sitting in the regal Lalitasana posture, shaded by Shesha (Vishnu’s serpent), carrying his conch and discus, Abhaya mudra and holding Sridevi or Lakshmi in his lap.

Comparatively smaller in form, Lakshmi too is adorned regally, carries a lotus bud in her hand which symbolizes the beginning of creation or life on earth (after its rescue from the ocean), and has her legs placed on a lotus pedestal emerging from the secondary platform.

The Divine Boar's Embrace

This exquisite bronze sculpture captures a powerful and deeply symbolic moment from Hindu mythology, depicting the divine boar avatar of Lord Vishnu, Varaha, in his majestic form, accompanied by the benevolent goddess Lakshmi. The Varaha avatar is one of the most revered and significant of Vishnu's ten principal avatars, a testament to his role as the preserver of cosmic order. In ancient tales, the demon Hiranyaksha abducted the Earth, dragging her to the depths of the cosmic ocean. Vishnu, in the form of the colossal boar Varaha, descended into the abyss, his tusks piercing the darkness and rescuing the Earth goddess, Bhumi, thereby restoring balance to the universe. This sculpture beautifully encapsulates the strength and divine intervention inherent in this narrative. ––––––––––

Artistry and Tradition

Crafted using the traditional Madhuchista Vidhana, also known as the lost-wax casting method, this statue is a masterpiece of South Indian bronze artistry. This ancient technique, honed over centuries, involves creating a wax model of the deity, which is then covered in a clay mold. The wax is melted out, leaving a hollow cavity into which molten metal, in this case, Panchaloha – a sacred alloy of five metals traditionally used for deities – is poured. The resulting casting is then meticulously finished by skilled artisans. The Panchaloha composition is believed to imbue the idol with spiritual potency and auspiciousness. The artisans of Swamimalai, a village renowned for its bronze casting heritage, have preserved these time-honored techniques, ensuring that each piece carries the legacy of generations of master craftsmen. ––––––––––

Symbolism and Devotion

The presence of Lakshmi seated gracefully on Varaha's lap signifies the auspicious union of prosperity and divine protection. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, and beauty, embodies abundance and well-being, while Varaha represents the unwavering strength and determination to overcome obstacles and protect dharma. Their combined presence in this sculpture symbolizes the confluence of material prosperity and spiritual security, a potent reminder for devotees that divine grace offers both earthly blessings and the strength to navigate life's challenges. The multifold hood of the serpent above Varaha's head is often associated with Shesha, the cosmic serpent upon whom Vishnu rests, further emphasizing Vishnu's supreme cosmic authority and the protective embrace he offers. Each detail, from the intricate adornments to the serene expressions, speaks volumes about the profound spiritual devotion that inspires such magnificent works of art.
