A contemplative Shiva bust. Made from aventurine, a form of quartz that resembles jade in terms of colour and texture. Sculpted with equal parts skill and equal parts devotion, the major part of the composition’s dynamism lies in the multitudinous snakes that cradle the head of Shiva.

Large eyes that are shut deep in samadhi (yogic contemplation). The undulations of the facial features have been carved such as to bring out the aventurescence and the divine glamour of Shiva. His ample tresses are gathered back from His brow and cascade laterally down either cheek.

Right beneath the long neck cradles a bed of snakes. Like the animal of the divine spirit, they nestle against the supreme godhead with their hoods, of varying sizes, raised up to Him. Some rise on either side of His head, in no particular symmetry, and gather in infinite coils on top of His head. Imbued with realistic detail of texture and stance, the smooth serpentine bodies have a lifelike language.

The Serpentine Embrace of the Divine

Lord Shiva, the Destroyer and Transformer, is one of the principal deities of Hinduism, revered as the supreme being. Known by countless names and embodying a multitude of paradoxes, Shiva represents both the fearsome and the benevolent, the ascetic and the householder, the cosmic dancer and the silent meditator. This magnificent sculpture, rendered in the calming and vibrant hue of jade aventurine, captures the profound essence of this powerful deity. The rich green stone, often associated with prosperity, healing, and tranquility, imbues the representation of Shiva with an aura of serene power.

A Serpent's Crown, A Symbol of Power

The coiled serpent adorning Shiva's form is not merely an adornment but a deeply significant symbol. Vasuki, the king of serpents, is often depicted as an integral part of Shiva's iconography, particularly around his neck and as his crown. Legend has it that when the gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) for the nectar of immortality (Amrita), Vasuki was used as the rope. From this perilous endeavor, a deadly poison (Halahala) emerged, threatening to engulf the universe. Shiva, in his boundless compassion, consumed the poison to save all beings. The poison turned his throat blue, earning him the epithet "Neelakantha" (blue-throated). The serpent, therefore, symbolizes Shiva's control over the most potent and dangerous forces, his ability to neutralize poison and overcome destruction. In this sculpture, the serpentine coils gracefully wrap around Shiva's head, reflecting this mastery and the eternal cycle of creation and destruction that he embodies. The intricate detailing of each scale and curve speaks to the skilled craftsmanship that has brought this divine form to life.

The Meditative Gaze

Shiva is often depicted in deep meditation, his third eye, when open, capable of unleashing immense power. This sculpture captures him in a moment of profound introspection, his eyes gently closed, suggesting a state of yogic absorption. The serene expression on his face invites contemplation and peace. The cool, smooth texture of the jade aventurine further enhances this feeling of tranquility, making this piece a focal point for meditation or a source of calm in any space. The subtle contours of his facial features, the peaceful smile, and the upward sweep of his hair are all rendered with remarkable precision, conveying a sense of divine grace and inner strength. The overall composition is one of harmonious balance, where the serpentine coils, representing the dynamic forces of the universe, are held in perfect equilibrium by Shiva's yogic stillness.
