12'' Dancing Lady | Madhuchista Vidhana (Lost-Wax) | Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai

The element of dance has been an integral component to the growth and prosperity of Indian aesthetics. Dance, as an activity did not simply mean a pastime of joyous significance but carried cosmological wonderment. In its fluidic act of movement, as was with the case of the ‘ananda tandava’ dance of the Nataraja, the dance is symbolic of the cycle of creation and destruction, signalling the coming ‘pralaya.’ Similarly, dance, for a celebrant, has also meant invoking the presence of the heavenly divine, honouring the gods in a temple, as was the case with the devadasis in ancient and medieval India (an excellent example of a celestial dancer of such kind is preserved in the Met).

The bronze sculptural image here is akin to the aforementioned examples, with the dancer’s graceful posture hinting to the supple manner in which the Natyashastra, or the Sanskrit treatise of performing arts written by Bharata Muni, details the aesthetic ‘Rasa’ theory. The lady’s gleeful facial expression resembles the ‘Hasyam’ Rasa of laughter, mirth, and comedy. The dancer’s body – from her ears and neck to across her body and legs – is adorned with sumptuous jewellery and the sensuous presence of the woman is due to the classical ‘tribhanga’ nature of the posture – where the body bends in three directions: at the knees, the hips, and the shoulders and neck. The tribhanga posture has had its presence marked for over two thousand years, from the ‘Dancing Girl’ excavated at Mohenjo-Daro to Buddhist representations of ‘yakshinis’ and ‘bodhisattvas.’ The dancer moreover is stylised on top of a raised lotus platform.
