A Manifestation of Vishnu

Dhanvantari is considered an avatar, or manifestation, of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities of the Hindu trinity. Vishnu is the preserver, maintaining cosmic order and intervening to restore balance when necessary. The emergence of Dhanvantari is recounted in the tale of the churning of the ocean of milk, the Samudra Manthana. During this cosmic event, gods and demons worked together to churn the ocean, seeking the nectar of immortality, Amrita. From these turbulent waters arose many treasures, including Dhanvantari, holding a pot filled with this elixir. His arrival signified the gift of healing and well-being for all beings.

The Ayurvedic Tradition

Dhanvantari is deeply associated with Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine. He is considered its patron deity, and the knowledge of Ayurveda is believed to have originated from him. Ayurvedic principles emphasize the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit, promoting health through balanced diet, lifestyle, and the use of herbal remedies. His image inspires practitioners and serves as a reminder of the holistic approach to healing that is central to Ayurveda. Holding the pot of Amrita, he offers not just physical healing, but also spiritual rejuvenation. His other hands hold a conch, a discus, and offer a blessing.
