It is in emulating the wonderful classicism of the Chola period bronzes that we have with us one of the finest manifestations of the sculptural image of Parvati here. The iconic tradition in the manner of its depiction (which very closely resembles the ‘Standing Parvati’ figure kept at the Met Museum) has allowed the ‘sthapati’ to bring this ‘panchaloha’ bronze image as close as possible to the glorious Sembiyan Mahadevi phase during the Chola period. With the rightward predominant hipswing allowing Parvati to rest in an ‘abhanga’ posture (which signifies being deep in thought), the sculptural image is adorned with a finely pleated ‘dhoti’ that is held by an elaborate girdle. Raised on top of a lotus plinth, Parvati’s ideal form of divinity is gracefully presented with the ‘kataka mudra,’ which represents fascination and enchantment. In being the benevolent and benign form of Kali, the pathbreaking scholar and curator Stuart Cary Welch understood such an iconic image to be a figurative ‘pratima,’ envisioning Shiva’s consort as the ultimate Shakti, and through such a supra-sensual icon, provide ‘samadhi’ for the perceiver and worshipper in taking the power of the divine from within the grace of such a stunning and figurative image.
