The Earth-Touching Gesture of Enlightenment

This exquisite brass sculpture captures the serene essence of the Bhumisparsha Mudra, a significant posture in Buddhist iconography representing the Buddha's attainment of enlightenment. The term "Bhumisparsha" translates to "earth-touching," and in this pose, the Buddha's right hand rests on his right knee, with fingers pointing downwards, gently touching the Earth. This gesture is deeply symbolic, signifying the moment Siddhartha Gautama, as the Buddha, overcame the temptations of Mara, the demon king, and achieved supreme wisdom. It is said that he called upon the Earth itself to bear witness to his virtuous deeds and his right to attain enlightenment. This handmade masterpiece is crafted from high-quality brass, a material revered for its durability and ability to hold intricate details. The artist has masterfully rendered the serene countenance of the Buddha, with his eyes gently closed in meditation and a subtle, knowing smile gracing his lips. The traditional robes are depicted with flowing lines and ornate borders, hinting at the richness and spirituality of the tradition. The dark patina of the robes contrasts beautifully with the burnished brass of the Buddha's face and upper torso, creating a visually striking and harmonious composition.

A Symbol of Steadfastness and Victory

The Bhumisparsha Mudra is not merely a physical posture; it is a profound visual narrative. It tells the story of resilience in the face of adversity and the unwavering commitment to truth and liberation. In Buddhist lore, it is during the night of his enlightenment that the Buddha faced his greatest challenges. Mara, representing illusion and desire, attempted to deter him with his armies of lust, anger, and delusion. Yet, the Bodhisattva remained firm, rooted in his understanding and compassion. By touching the earth, he declared that he was not merely a man seeking enlightenment but a being whose journey and attainments were deeply connected to the very fabric of existence, witnessed and validated by the Mother Earth. The placement of the left hand, often resting in the lap in the Dhyana Mudra (meditation gesture), further emphasizes the Buddha's profound state of inner peace and concentration. This duality of gestures – the grounding earth-touch and the meditative stillness – embodies the complete path to awakening. Owning this sculpture brings a tangible representation of these powerful spiritual principles into your home or meditation space.

Craftsmanship Rooted in Tradition

Each aspect of this 13-inch statue reflects the dedication and skill of traditional artisans. The meticulous detailing on the urna (a curl of hair between the eyebrows, a mark of a Buddha), the Ushnisha (a protuberance at the top of the head, symbolizing wisdom), and the delicate rendering of the hair are testaments to generations of artistic heritage. The use of brass ensures that this piece is not only aesthetically pleasing but also a lasting artifact, capable of becoming a cherished heirloom. Its substantial presence makes it a commanding centerpiece, inspiring contemplation and a sense of spiritual grounding. This sculpture is more than just an object of art; it is a conduit to a timeless narrative of awakening, peace, and the ultimate triumph of the spirit.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
