A simple, standing figure of Lord Pashupatinath. Pashupatinath is the form of Shiva which indicates His lordship (the words ‘pati’ and ‘nath’ in Sanskrt mean lord and master) over all creatures (‘pashu’). An integral element of the Pashupatinath iconography is the innocent quadruped in His posterior left hand.

The Pashupatinath murti that you see on this page has been handpicked from Swamimalai. Swamimalai in South India is where intergenerational families of sculptors are keeping alive the great sculptural tradition of India. The medium is panchaloha, a bronze made up of five (‘pancha’) different iron-based (‘loha’) alloys, cast using madhuchista vidhana (lost wax metalcasting). It explains the red earth colour of the sculpture.

Lord Pashupatinath bears a serene yet solemn expression on His face. From the crown on His head to the plinth beneath His feet, including the imposing stature and proportions of His form, this composition bears every hallmark of traditional South Indian workmanship.

The Majestic Lord of Beings

This exquisite bronze sculpture embodies Pashupatinath, the Lord of Beings, a powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva. Revered as the protector and ruler of all creatures, Pashupatinath is a deeply significant deity in Hinduism, embodying both immense power and profound compassion. The sculptor has masterfully captured the divine presence of Shiva in this standing posture, radiating an aura of serene authority and cosmic balance. The meticulous detailing, from the intricate headdress adorned with a crescent moon, symbolizing Shiva's dominion over time and the cosmos, to the delicate folds of the dhoti, speaks volumes of the artisan's skill and devotion. ––––––––––

A Symphony of Panchaloha

Crafted using the traditional Panchaloha technique, this sculpture is a testament to the ancient metalworking traditions of South India. Panchaloha, meaning "five metals," is a sacred alloy consisting of gold, silver, copper, tin, and iron. This blend is believed to possess auspicious qualities and is often used in the creation of divine idols. The lost-wax casting method, known as Madhuchista Vidhana, further enhances the artistry. This complex process involves creating a wax model, which is then encased in clay, fired to melt out the wax, and finally filled with the molten Panchaloha. The result is a seamless, detailed, and enduring piece that seems to possess a life of its own. The patina developed over time adds a rich depth and character to the bronze, hinting at the sacred rituals and blessings it has witnessed.

Embodiment of Divine Attributes

In this representation, Pashupatinath holds symbolic objects in his multiple hands, each conveying profound meaning. One hand is raised in Abhaya Mudra, the gesture of fearlessness and protection, assuring devotees of divine safeguarding. Another hand might be depicted holding a trident (Trishul), representing the three fundamental forces of creation, preservation, and destruction, or a damaru (drum), whose sound is said to be the primal vibration of the universe. The other hands may carry a battle-axe (Parashu) or a serpent, both potent symbols associated with Shiva's immense power and ascetic nature. The serene expression on the deity's face, with half-closed eyes, suggests deep meditation and inner contemplation, a reflection of Shiva's yogic aspect as the Great Ascetic. ––––––––––

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

The origin of this masterpiece is Swamimalai, a village in Tamil Nadu renowned for its ancient bronze-casting traditions. For centuries, artisans here have preserved and perfected the art of sculpting divine forms, passing down their knowledge through generations. This sculpture is not merely an idol; it is a living link to a rich cultural heritage, a sacred artifact that brings the divine presence into your home and serves as a constant reminder of cosmic harmony and spiritual enlightenment. Its presence is meant to inspire devotion, bestow blessings, and imbue any space with an aura of peace and divinity.
