The traditional iconography of Nepal is used in this stunning gilded copper statue to depict the oceanic stillness of Buddha Shakyamuni (the Shakya ascetic), in his Bhumi-sparsha aspect. The Bhumi-sparsha or earth-touching gesture of Buddha narrates the episode of Buddha defeating the forces of Mara, the demon of desire. Mara challenged Buddha to prove his worth as an enlightened being, and as an answer, Tathagata called upon the universal witness, goddess earth, or Vasudhara to become his witness.

Amidst all this motion, Buddha remained firm and immovable, thus making Bhumi-sparsha mudra a prominent moment in Buddhism, which teaches the followers to embody the calmness of Buddha in the face of the world’s challenges.

In this sculpture, Buddha sits on a beautiful lotus seat, with intricately patterned Cheevara or monk’s garments, studded with precious stones. His sacred attributes- urna (forehead mark), ushnisha (cranial bump), curled hair, three lines of flesh folds on the neck, broad chest, and lovely limbs are presented with perfection. The softly delineated eyes of the Buddha, with charming hints of colors create an effect of depth, that pulls the onlooker closer to the icon of the Buddha, and as a result, closer to his iconic life.

The Awakened One

This exquisite 13-inch statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, handcrafted in Nepal, serves as a potent reminder of the potential for enlightenment that resides within us all. More than just a beautiful object, this meticulously crafted piece embodies centuries of artistic tradition and spiritual devotion. The statue portrays the Buddha in a meditative pose, radiating serenity and compassion. Crafted from copper and gilded with luxurious gold, this piece is further enhanced by intricate stonework, each element carefully placed to accentuate the divine presence of the enlightened one.

A Glimpse into the Life of Siddhartha

Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, lived in ancient India around the 6th century BCE. Born a prince, he was shielded from the harsh realities of life. However, upon encountering suffering, old age, sickness, and death, he renounced his privileged life in search of a path to liberation. After years of intense meditation and self-discipline, Siddhartha achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, becoming the Buddha – the Awakened One. He spent the rest of his life teaching others the path to enlightenment through the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. He is considered the supreme Buddha who is said to reappear after a very long period to teach the dharma.

Artisanship from the Heart of the Himalayas

This statue is a testament to the skill and dedication of Nepalese artisans. Nepal, nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, has long been a center of Buddhist art and culture. The tradition of crafting sacred images, like this representation of Shakyamuni Buddha, has been passed down through generations, each artisan imbuing their work with devotion and a deep understanding of Buddhist principles. The process of creating such a statue is arduous, involving skilled metalworking, precise gilding techniques, and meticulous stone setting. The use of copper and gold is not merely for aesthetic appeal, but also reflects the preciousness of the teachings and the reverence for the Buddha.

Details of Craftsmanship

Observe the serene expression on the Buddha's face, the graceful posture, and the intricate details of his robes. The gold gilding shimmers, reflecting light and drawing the eye to the divine qualities embodied in the statue. Notice the elaborate stonework, each gem carefully selected and placed to enhance the overall beauty and significance of the piece. The statue's dimensions, 13.0 x 9.0 x 6.0 inches, make it a substantial and commanding presence, perfect for a meditation space, altar, or any area where you wish to cultivate a sense of peace and mindfulness. The base of the statue is intricately decorated with lotus petal designs, a symbolic representation of the blossoming of wisdom and compassion from the mud of suffering. The bowl in the Buddha's hand symbolizes his renunciation and his offering of the dharma to all beings. Bring home this statue to be reminded of Shakyamuni’s teachings every day.
