Divine compassion incarnate, the goddess White Tara is magnificently depicted in this wooden statue from Nepal, which appears animated with the gentle compassion of the deity. On an intricately carved upturned lotus that symbolizes enlightenment and purity, White Tara stands in a graceful posture, whose serenity is enhanced by the heavenliness on her countenance. An imposing crown, ornate jewelry, and diaphanous skirt, worn by her are all exquisitely delineated, and so are the eyes on her forehead and palms, an identifying feature of White Tara statues.

Her hand holding the delicate lotus is in Vitarka mudra- the gesture of imparting wisdom while her right hand dangles down, in Varada mudra, the gesture of bestowing boons. Though immensely still in her expressions, the pose of White Tara in this statue appears as if she is mid-movement, having just descended from heaven, to answer the prayers of her devotees.

Embodying Compassion and Action: A Masterful Depiction of Tara

From the heart of Nepal, where ancient traditions and spiritual devotion intertwine, emerges this exquisite wooden statue of Goddess Tara. Standing at a commanding thirteen inches, this representation captures the divine essence of Tara, the "Mother of Liberation," a Bodhisattva revered for her swift action and boundless compassion. Crafted with meticulous detail by skilled artisans, the statue embodies a profound spiritual presence, bringing the sacred energy of the Himalayas into your sacred space. The form of Tara is depicted with a graceful posture, her body in a gentle tribhanga (three-bend) pose, suggesting movement and dynamism. Her serene countenance, with downcast eyes and a subtle smile, radiates a profound sense of peace and inner knowing. Adorned with intricate jewelry – necklaces, armbands, and a detailed diadem – she is presented in her regal aspect. The flowing robes, rendered with a remarkable sense of volume and texture, cascade around her legs, hinting at her swift descent to offer aid. In her right hand, she bestows the boon of protection and fulfillment, while her left hand holds a lotus blossom, symbolizing purity and the blossoming of enlightenment. ––––––––––––––––––––

The Legend of Tara: A Swift and Loving Protector

The mythology surrounding Tara is rich and varied, underscoring her multifaceted nature. One prominent tale describes her emergence from the tears of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, as he wept for the suffering of the world. From his tears, a single tear drop fell and solidified into a beautiful lotus, from which Tara arose. Her name itself, meaning "star" or "to cross over," signifies her ability to guide beings across the ocean of suffering. Another narrative speaks of her as a wise princess who vowed to always be reborn as a woman to effectively aid sentient beings on their path to enlightenment. This statue serves as a tangible reminder of Tara's constant readiness to respond to prayers and alleviate suffering, making her a beloved figure in Tibetan Buddhism and beyond. This captivating wooden statue is more than just an object of beauty; it is a conduit for spiritual connection and a source of inspiration. Its presence can foster an atmosphere of peace, protection, and mindful awareness in any environment. Whether placed in a personal altar, meditation space, or as a statement piece in your home, it invites contemplation of compassion, wisdom, and the transformative power of divine feminine energy. The rich, dark wood and the subtle patina of age speak to the timeless quality of this sacred art form, promising a lifetime of spiritual enrichment.
