Lord Shiva, the first Yogi, introduced mankind to something that was always beyond their perception. He introduced them to the possibilities of the beyond, of rising above petty life, and to know the source of very creation. That's why, Lord Shiva, is revered and worshipped as the first Guru (master) in his Dakshinamurthy form.
As per the legends, when the realised Shiva started dripping with bliss and emanated divinity all around him, many people gathered, recognising that something wonderful was happening with Shiva. They waited and waited, but Shiva didn't even bother to open his eyes. Many years went by, and by then, only a few people remained around him. Recognising them as worthy enough to expound the greatest of all teachings, Shiva finally opened his eyes. It is said that on the auspicious day of Guru Purnima (full moon), Shiva finally turned Dakshina (south), and delivered the first sermons of truth to them, hence known as Dakshinamurty.
This beautiful statue captures lord Dakshinamurty in unmoving stillness and divine serenity, along with his disciples sitting around him. With folded hands, they are showing their limitless devotion to Shiva. The lord is sitting under a tree with his right leg set upon a demon, which signifies the ignorance of the human mind. He is holding a Damru(musical instrument) and a flame of fire in his upper arms. The fire is the symbol of the light of knowledge, which dispels the darkness of ignorance of his disciples. While holding scriptures in his lower right hand, the lord is blessing his disciples with the left hand. The lord is also adorned with beautiful clothes and exquisite pieces of jewelleries. His serene face is emanating peace and silence all around.
Lord Dakshinamurty is the embodiment of timeless truth and a perfect Guru. It is said that those who worship Lord Dakshinamurty are soon blessed with a living Guru. This elegant statue is enough to pervade through every heart that sets its eyes upon it.
