An unusual Saraswati murti for your home or office temple. The tall, slender wife of Brahma breaks into a divine dance routine. Mata Saraswati is the presiding deity over learning and the arts, so it is no exception that She should play on the veena (the usual Saraswati iconography) or assume an expressive, classical stance. The deep, metallic sheen comes from the pure bronze medium. The overwhelming majority of contemporary iconographical reproductions of Hoysala-era sculptures is executed in bronze. Needless to say, it is an elite medium which adds to the solemnity of the subject. The ample adornment on each line and curve of this Maa Saraswati murti not only borrows heavily from Hoysala aesthetic, but is also proof of the bronzeworker’s skill. Note the many-sided plinth beneath Sarswati Maa murti’s feet. The complex lines and angles and the nature of the engravings give the impression that they have been extracted straight from the body of a 10th-14th century (Hoysala era) temple.

Echoes of Ancient Traditions

The Hoysala style, known for its delicate carvings and exquisite sculptures, finds its zenith in this remarkable representation of Saraswati. This tradition, flourishing in the temples of Karnataka, India, sought to capture the divine in tangible form, imbuing each creation with spiritual significance. Saraswati herself is a figure deeply woven into the fabric of Hindu mythology. She is often depicted playing her veena, its melodies said to bring forth life and consciousness from the primordial waters. She is the daughter of Lord Brahma, the creator, and her wisdom is the foundation upon which the universe is built. It is believed that meditating on her form can bestow clarity of thought, eloquence, and artistic talent. This statue serves as a powerful conduit for those qualities, bringing the auspicious presence of the Goddess into your sacred space or home. ––––––––––––––––––––
