Made with the sacred Panchaloha bronze, this statue presents the Pradosh-Moorthy aspect of Shiva-Shakti, a symbol of the union of Purusha and Prakriti which is at the core of the Universe’s auspiciousness.

One of the most auspicious periods to obtain the blessings of Shiva and Parvati is during the Pradosha Vrata, which is celebrated on the Trayodashi of the lunar fortnight.

Shiva is depicted as Pashupatinath, the Lord of Souls, who regulates and guides beings to righteousness, accompanied by Parvati as Shivakami, his beloved wife, carrying a lotus bud that symbolizes the origin of the Universe.

Surrounded by a fiery aureole, Shiva-Parvati is enthroned on Nandi, the divine bull whose animated presence in the statue is marked by the sway of his tail and alertness of his gaze, guarding the sacred Peetham of Uma-Maheshwara.

A Divine Union on Nandi's Back

This exquisite bronze sculpture captures the divine couple, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, in a moment of serene grace, seated upon their celestial vahana, Nandi the bull. The entire composition is ensconced within a radiant prabhamandala, a solar halo symbolizing divine effulgence and the cyclical nature of time. The intricate craftsmanship, employing the ancient Madhuchista Vidhana (lost-wax) technique, brings to life the Panchaloha bronze, a sacred alloy traditionally composed of five metals, imbuing the piece with profound spiritual significance.

The Significance of Pradosha

The depiction is specifically of "Pradosha Moorthy," representing Lord Shiva during Pradosha, an auspicious time that occurs during the twilight period, just before the moonrise on the thirteenth day of every lunar fortnight. This period is considered highly potent for devotion and prayer, as it is believed that Lord Shiva, along with Goddess Parvati, performs his cosmic dance, the Tandava, in the heavens. Devotees often observe fasts and perform pujas during Pradosha to seek blessings, purification, and liberation. The presence of Nandi, Shiva's devoted bull, signifies unwavering faith and the power to overcome obstacles. Nandi, in Hindu mythology, is not just a mount but a gatekeeper to Shiva's realm and a symbol of dharma, strength, and devotion.

Artistry and Tradition

Crafted using the time-honored lost-wax casting method, a technique perfected by generations of artisans in Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu, this sculpture embodies a rich artistic heritage. This meticulous process, passed down through oral tradition and practice, involves creating a wax model, covering it with clay, firing it to melt out the wax, and then pouring molten bronze into the void. The resulting casting, once revealed, is a testament to the sculptor's skill and dedication. The Panchaloha alloy itself is believed to possess unique energetic properties, making these bronzes highly revered for their spiritual value and aesthetic beauty. The detailed ornamentation on Nandi, the regal posture of the deities, and the dynamic form of the halo all speak to the mastery of the craft. This piece serves not only as a devotional object but also as a cultural artifact, connecting the viewer to the enduring traditions of Indian artistry and spirituality.
