This lepidolite Krishna is a unique iconography. At first glance, it is a visual narrative of the Lord’s victory over the wicked Kaliya. However, a more discerning eye would notice the multitudinous hoods and the wise, assertive stance of each of those (as opposed to venomous and vindictive), and conclude that it is actually Sheshanaga.

Shesha is the name of the naga (snake) that forms the bed of Lord Vishnu in paraloka (otherworldly realm of existence). In this murti, He is seen at the feet of Krishna, the eighth of Vishnu’s dashavataras. In fact, the form of Sheshanaga with numerous hoods and the body gathered in coil upon coil, forms the pedestal upon which He stands.

Lepidolite is a class of mica. The block of mineral from which this Krishna is carved is characterised by dense natural colour (deep purple). A great deal of detail and expression has been introduced into the mineral medium, especially in the serpentine musculature of Sheshanaga.

A Divine Dance Carved in Amethyst Hues

This exquisite sculpture captures one of the most iconic and powerful scenes from Hindu mythology: Lord Krishna dancing atop the multi-headed serpent Sheshnag. Crafted from the stunning lepidolite stone, known for its rich purple and pink hues and shimmering mica inclusions, this artwork is a testament to both divine narratives and masterful craftsmanship. The deep, resonant purple of the lepidolite evokes a sense of spirituality, royalty, and calm, perfectly complementing the divine figure it represents. Each detail, from the delicate folds of Krishna's garment to the coiled power of Sheshnag, is rendered with incredible precision, bringing this ancient story to vibrant life.

The Lord of Cosmic Play

In Hindu tradition, Krishna is revered as the eighth avatar of Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. His divine play, or *lila*, encompasses acts of immense power and profound love. One of his most celebrated feats is taming Kaliya, a venomous serpent that had poisoned the waters of the Yamuna River. Krishna, in a display of divine dominance and compassion, danced upon Kaliya's hoods, subduing the serpent and forcing it to retreat, thereby restoring peace and purity to the land. This act symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, the control of primal forces by divine grace, and the ultimate cosmic order that Krishna embodies. Sheshnag, the king of all Nāgas, represents eternity and the boundless, supporting the universe itself, and is often depicted as the couch upon which Vishnu rests. In this depiction, the numerous hoods of Sheshnag form a protective canopy and a powerful pedestal for Krishna's celestial dance.

Lepidolite: The Stone of Transition and Peace

The choice of lepidolite for this sacred depiction is profoundly significant. Lepidolite is a beautiful mica mineral, prized for its soothing lavender and purple shades. It is often associated with emotional healing, peace, and transition. In spiritual practices, lepidolite is believed to calm the mind, ease stress, and facilitate personal transformation. By carving this divine scene in lepidolite, the artist has infused the artwork with a tangible aura of tranquility and spiritual elevation. The stone's natural beauty, with its subtle variations in color and the presence of shimmering mica, adds a dynamic and almost ethereal quality to the sculpture, making it a captivating centerpiece for any sacred space or collection. The approximately 16-inch height ensures it commands attention and allows for appreciation of its intricate details.
