A perfection of
artistic and spiritual elements, this copper statue of Buddha is a magnificent
masterpiece from Nepal. Glistening with the seamless polish of the metal, the
sculpture depicts Buddha seated in meditation, on a stunning lotus throne whose
petals are marked by the conch motif- a symbol of the origin of the Universe
and eternity.
Buddha is presented
with a youthful luster on his countenance, which is alluring to gaze at, with
his meditative eyes, refined nose and inwardly smiling lips bringing hints of
liveliness to the composition. Holding an alms bowl and the gesture of touching
the earth, this statute represents the Bhumisparsha aspect of the Buddha, an
act which is seen as the declaration of the Enlightenment of Siddhartha.
Sitting in
meditation, Siddhartha was troubled by Mara, the demon of desires who tried to
win him over with force and sweet words. Siddhartha however was unshakabl.
Seeing that his tricks were of no use, Mara challenged Him to prove his wisdom.
Calmly, Siddhartha touched the Earth, calling the omnipresent goddess
Vasundhara (Earth) to bear witness to his journey to Enlightenment. The Earth
came forth, and Mara was defeated. Siddhartha became Buddha at the moment
mesmerizingly solidified in this copper statue.
Revering the virtues
of the Enlightenment, He has been offered a garment that has dragon and cloud
motifs adorning it. Dragons in Buddhist philosophy are seen as symbols of
dormant wisdom, while clouds stand for impermanence. Seeing through the veil of
impermanence, Siddhartha was able to awaken his inner potential- a cosmic
moment presented in this copper statue as a call, to follow the path of the
Buddha.
