A Saraswati murti with striking Hoysala influences. Sculpted from pure bronze and poised under a simhayali Kirtimukham archway. Maa Saraswati is the fair wife of Lord Brahma, the presiding deity over learning and the fine arts. As such, the Saraswati idol is incomplete without the long-necked veena, an Indian classical musical instrument.

The art of the Hoysala period flourished in the 10th-14th centuries under the architectural and iconographical patronage of the Hoysala dynasty rulers. It is characterised by traditional iconography, luxuriant adornment, and perfect symmetry and application of skill. The Saraswati puja murti that you see on this page is no exception.

A many-layered, lotus petal-engraved plinth of multiple quadrilateral tiers. A gigantic lotus-shaped throne, flanked by miniature peacocks (Saraswati Mata murti vahana). Finally, the exquisite-limbed chaturbhujadharini seated in ardhapadmasana.

The Embodiment of Divine Knowledge and Arts

This exquisite bronze sculpture captures the serene and radiant form of Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu deity of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. Seated gracefully upon a magnificent Kirtimukha throne, she embodies the very essence of creative inspiration and intellectual pursuit. The intricate detailing and masterful craftsmanship of this piece reflect the renowned Hoysala style, a testament to the artistic heritage of southern India. Saraswati is often depicted with four arms, symbolizing the four aspects of human personality: mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), consciousness (chitta), and ego (ahamkara). In this portrayal, she is shown holding her divine veena, the stringed instrument that represents the vibrations of the cosmos and the harmonious flow of music and sound. Her gentle smile and contemplative gaze invite devotion and inspire contemplation, making this statue a focal point of any sacred space or artistic studio. ––––––––––––––––––

A Throne of Auspicious Power

The Kirtimukha, meaning "face of glory," is an iconic motif in Indian art and architecture. This fierce, mask-like face, often depicted with gaping jaws, is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the sacred. Its presence beneath Goddess Saraswati signifies her supreme power and her role as a protector of knowledge and truth. The elaborate arch surrounding the deity, adorned with floral motifs and mythical creatures, further enhances the grandeur of this divine seat. The peacock, a common symbol of beauty and grace, is subtly incorporated, further emphasizing the artistic prowess associated with Saraswati. This sculpture is not merely an object of art; it is an invocation of divine blessings. It is believed that by venerating Goddess Saraswati, devotees can enhance their intellectual capabilities, gain proficiency in the arts, and achieve success in their academic and creative endeavors. The material, bronze, itself carries historical significance, being a durable and revered metal used for centuries in the creation of sacred icons. Its rich patina and enduring quality make this statue a timeless piece, destined to be cherished for generations. ––––––––––––––––––
