There is a tradition of lighting temple lamps after accomplishing one's aspirations. Devotees experiment with the devotional lights that must be given as gifts. Sometimes, the lamp's design is sanctified with fortunate symbols; other times, the number of candles increases. This brass lamp has 160 wicks and is a Kavara Vilakku, also known as an Ashtothira Deepam, or a lamp with 108 or more wicks, which was offered to temples by the devotees. It has a traditional structure of a long stem with branching lamps attached to more suspension lamps. These lamps are only lighted at festivals or special occasions honoring a god. The illumination of this lamp is related to ceremonies. This is a highly remarkable light that is not widely used but has historical and spiritual value.

The Radiant Cascade of Devotion

This exquisite brass lamp, a testament to the skilled artistry of South India, stands as a beacon of tradition and spiritual luminescence. Its intricate design, featuring 160 individual wicks, evokes a sense of awe and reverence, transforming any space into a sanctuary of light and devotion. Each element of this handcrafted piece speaks of dedication, from the polished brass that gleams with an inner warmth to the meticulously shaped tiers that cascade downwards, reminiscent of ancient temple architecture.

Symbolism and Sacred Light

In many cultures, the lamp, or *diya*, is a profound symbol of knowledge, purity, and the dispelling of darkness. In Hinduism, the lighting of lamps is a central ritual during festivals like Diwali, the festival of lights, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The act of lighting a lamp is believed to invite divine blessings and create a sacred atmosphere. This multi-wick lamp, with its impressive stature, amplifies this symbolism, suggesting a profound abundance of divine grace and illumination, capable of banishing all forms of negativity and ushering in prosperity and peace. The tiered structure itself can be seen as a metaphor for spiritual ascent, with each level representing a step closer to enlightenment or a different facet of the divine.

A Masterpiece of Indian Craftsmanship

Handmade in India, this brass lamp is more than just a decorative item; it is a piece of functional art that carries centuries of cultural heritage. The craftsmanship involved in its creation is evident in every detail, from the perfectly balanced base that ensures stability to the delicate chains and holders that suspend each individual lamp. The use of brass, a material deeply embedded in Indian artisanal traditions, adds to its authenticity and enduring beauty. Brass is known for its resilience and its ability to be shaped into complex forms, making it ideal for creating such elaborate and meaningful objects. Owning this lamp is not just acquiring an object, but embracing a piece of living history, a connection to the artisans who have honed their skills through generations. Its presence can invoke a sense of calm, peace, and spiritual connection, making it a perfect centerpiece for any puja room, meditation space, or as a stunning statement piece in your home.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
