Panchamukhi literally means five- faced. Lord Hanuman is a great yogi who took the form of Panchamukhi to protect Lord Rama and Lakhman from Ahiravana (King of Pathala). It was said that Ahiravana could be killed only by extinguishing the five lamps kept in five different directions, so Hanuman took the form of Panchamukhi (Hayagriva, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hanuman), blew out all the lamps and killed Ahiravana. ‘Five’ represents the five cosmic elements, wind, water, sky, earth and fire. His five faces represent the five powerful deities; Varaha (wild boar) is an incarnation of Lord Narayana, faces north and grants dhana prapthi. Hayagriva is also an incarnation of Lord Narayana, faces upwards and grants wisdom and knowledge.

Garuda is the sacred vehicle of Lord Narayana, faces west and grants sakala soubhagya. Narasimha is the fiercest form of Lord Narayana, faces south and grants abhishta siddhi. Hanuman is an incarnation of Lord Shiva, faces east and grants ishta siddhi.

In this sculpture, Lord Hanuman is wearing beautifully designed short dhoti. Left hand holds a gada that touches the base and right hand is in abhaya mudra of fearlessness. The other eight hands have different weapons symbolizing power, fearlessness and strength showing a universe of its own kind. He is standing on a rock like pedestal; wearing a long flower garland. The vertical thin lined texture of the upper body, like that of a tiger is giving a fierce and vibrant look.

The combination of brass and wood in silver and brown color is giving it a noteworthy appearance. This rare sculpture of Panchamukhi Hanuman has its own beauty and advent.
