A moment of Buddha’s victory over desires is immortalized in Buddhist art in the icon of “Bhumisparsha” or earth-touching Buddha. Extending his one hand to the ground, while keeping the other hand and his mind in meditation, Buddha called upon the goddess Earth to become a witness to his enlightenment, when he was provoked by the demon of desires, Mara to prove his virtues.

Simply, without any violence or taking up arms, Buddha became victorious over the demon and his forces, which is why this form is also called “Buddha Mara-Vijaya” or Buddha who is victorious over Mara. The moving beauty of the moment of Buddha’s victory has inspired the maker of this marvelous gilt copper statue from Nepal, who has condensed the essence of the episode in the iconography of the statue.

A meticulous sculpting of metal gives the statue a perfection beyond words, which becomes divine bathed in pure gold. Each feature of the Buddha is delegated in an unblemished manner, to underline his heavenliness. The hand softly placed in Dhyana mudra on his lap and the one about to reach the ground, add a balance of movement and stillness to the statue. With a seamless stroke of brush, the eyes of Shakyamuni are painted, infusing the face and composition with an unparalleled animation.

The Unyielding Gaze: A Symbol of Enlightenment

This magnificent statue captures Shakyamuni Buddha in the profound Bhumi-Sparsha mudra, the gesture of "calling the earth to witness." Here, the Buddha sits in a contemplative posture, his left hand resting in his lap, signifying his renunciation of worldly desires, while his right hand touches the earth. This powerful gesture recalls a pivotal moment in his spiritual journey, where he faced Mara, the embodiment of temptation and illusion, under the Bodhi tree. It was then that the earth itself bore witness to his unwavering determination and ultimate enlightenment. Crafted from fine copper and adorned with a rich gilding of gold, this statue radiates a serene luminescence, inviting introspection and spiritual contemplation. ––––––––––––––––––––

Craftsmanship Rooted in Tradition

Hailing from Nepal, a land steeped in Buddhist heritage, this statue embodies the pinnacle of Nepalese artistic tradition. The skilled artisans have meticulously sculpted the form, imbuing it with a lifelike presence and profound spiritual aura. The delicate rendering of the Buddha's serene facial features, the flowing robes adorned with intricate patterns, and the powerful symbolism of the mudra all speak to a deep understanding and reverence for Buddhist iconography. The use of copper as the base material, known for its durability and aesthetic qualities, further enhances the statue's timeless appeal. The subsequent application of gold leaf not only elevates its visual splendor but also signifies purity, divinity, and the radiant nature of the awakened mind. This piece is more than just an object of art; it is a tangible connection to centuries of spiritual devotion and artistic mastery. ––––––––––––––––––––

A Beacon of Peace and Wisdom

The Bhumi-Sparsha mudra is a potent symbol of overcoming obstacles and asserting truth. In Buddhist lore, when Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment, he was challenged by Mara's attempts to distract and deter him. The Buddha's gesture of touching the earth signified his grounding in reality, his refusal to be swayed by illusory temptations, and his profound realization of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. By calling the earth as his witness, he affirmed the veracity of his enlightenment and the efficacy of his teachings. This statue, with its commanding presence, serves as a constant reminder of the Buddha's victory over ignorance and suffering, offering a source of inspiration for practitioners seeking their own path to peace and wisdom. Its gilded surface reflects the light, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the illuminating power of knowledge. ––––––––––––––––––––

An Heirloom of Spiritual Significance

This substantial 18-inch statue is designed to be a focal point in any sacred space, whether it be a meditation room, a monastery, or a personal altar. Its impressive size and the luxurious gleam of its golden finish command attention, drawing the viewer into a state of reverence. The intricate details, from the subtle contours of the Buddha's form to the finely etched patterns on his robes, are a testament to the dedication and skill of the Nepalese craftspeople. Possessing such a piece is to hold a fragment of spiritual history, an object imbued with deep meaning and aesthetic beauty. It is an heirloom that can be passed down through generations, a continuous source of spiritual guidance and a beautiful reminder of the enduring path to enlightenment.
