Embodiment of Infinite Compassion

This magnificent brass sculpture depicts Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion in Tibetan Buddhism. Revered as the embodiment of all the Buddhas' compassion, Chenrezig is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism, embodying the benevolent gaze of the awakened mind towards all sentient beings. The iconography of this statue is rich with symbolism, each element conveying a profound spiritual message. The four arms represent the boundless nature of compassion, capable of reaching out to help all beings in all directions and all times. ––––––––––––––––––––

Symbolism and Form

In the primary set of hands, held at the heart in prayer (anjali mudra), Chenrezig holds a wish-fulfilling jewel (chintamani), symbolizing the attainment of enlightenment and the fulfillment of all aspirations for the benefit of others. The upper right hand holds a crystal mala, representing the continuous practice of mantra recitation and the cycle of rebirth, while the upper left hand cradles a lotus flower, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening, which blooms unstained even in the mud of worldly existence. The flowing robes and ornate crown further enhance the deity's regal and divine presence, adorned with intricate detailing that speaks to the skill of the Indian artisans who crafted this piece. The serene expression on the face is one of profound peace and unwavering empathy. ––––––––––––––––––––

Cultural Significance and Artistic Mastery

Chenrezig is particularly venerated in Tibet, where it is believed that the Dalai Lamas are his earthly emanations. The devotion to this Bodhisattva has inspired countless works of art throughout the Himalayan region and beyond. This particular statue, crafted from brass with a patina that accentuates its sculpted features, is a testament to traditional Indian craftsmanship. The meticulous attention to detail in the ornamentation, the flowing lines of the drapery, and the serene countenance all contribute to its powerful spiritual aura. Standing at 18 inches, it is a commanding presence, suitable for a sacred altar, meditation space, or as a centerpiece for contemplation and inspiration. The weight and texture of the brass lend it a tangible sense of antiquity and sacredness, inviting a deep connection with the divine energy of compassion it represents.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
