Lord Murugana is the most widely loved deity in South India. He has two wives, Devasena and Valli, both of whom are the stuff of legend and myth. While Devasena is often depicted next to Her husband without the presence of Valli, Valli’s iconography is never independent of both Her husband and Her co-wife. The set of three sculptures that you see on this page depicts the three deities in perfect aesthetic harmony.
To the left of Lord Murugana is Devasena. Daughter of Lord Indra and Shachi, She was betrothed to Him when Her father attained to power in paraloka (otherworldly realm of existence). Valli, however, is a huntress of tribal origin, having been relegated to such a humble station by the envy of none other than Devasena from a past life wherein they were sisters. She stands to the right of the central deity, identical to Her sister in both beauty and adornment. Note the perfect symmetry with which the sculptor has executed the twin figurines.
Upturned lotuses, poised upon quadrilateral pedestals. The chaturbhujadhari Murugana stands amidst His wives with His vahana, the peacock, at His feet. The weapons in three of His four hands and the halo behind His tall crown signify His cosmic glamour. Without His kriyashakti (symbolised by Devasena) and ichchhashakti (by Valli), the Lord would be incomplete.
