Legends of Lakshmi

The birth of Lakshmi is a story woven into the very fabric of Hindu cosmology. According to legend, she emerged during the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean by the gods and demons in their quest for the Amrita, the nectar of immortality. As the ocean churned, fourteen precious jewels and beings emerged, and among them rose Lakshmi, radiant and beautiful, chosen by Vishnu to be his consort. Another tale describes her springing forth from the forehead of Brahma. These stories emphasize Lakshmi’s divine origins and her importance in the cosmic order. Worshipping her is said to bring abundance to one’s life.
