Buddha in Bhumisparsha mudra or the “Earth touching gesture” is a sculpture of profound beauty in Buddhist art. Marking the moment of Buddha’s proclamation of his Enlightenment, by calling the goddess Earth to be his witness, as an answer to the efforts of Mara (the demon of desires) to move him away from the path to enlightenment. Thus, this aspect of Buddha in art is also called “Buddha Maravijaya” (Buddha who is victorious over Mara or desires).

This pink serpentine stone statue shows the Maravijaya Buddha being hailed by inhabitants of all realms as the Enlightened One. On an elaborate platform marked by the figures of female devotees and the Dhammachakra with Deer symbols, Buddha sits on a Padmasana or lotus throne. The symmetry of his coiled hair, facial expression, and the riverine flow of his garment bring to mind the classic Gandhara statues of the Buddha.

A blooming lotus forms the halo of the Buddha which is amplified by the stylized peacocks on each side and the heavenly figures hovering above. On the sides of Buddha are Yali figures, on elephants, a symbol of regalia and grandeur in Indian architecture.

The Earth Witness

This serene statue depicts Lord Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, also known as the "earth-touching" gesture. This significant mudra represents the moment of enlightenment for Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha. It's a powerful symbol of unwavering resolve and ultimate triumph over temptation and doubt. The right hand is extended downwards, the fingers touching the earth, signifying Buddha calling upon the earth goddess, Sthavara, to witness his enlightenment and validate his attainment. It is a gesture of both humility and profound understanding.

Artisanship in Pink Serpentine

Crafted from pink serpentine stone, this statue carries a unique aesthetic. Serpentine is often associated with healing, protection, and the grounding of energies. The soft hues of the stone lend a gentle and calming presence to the formidable symbolism of the Bhumisparsha Mudra. The meticulous carving showcases a deep understanding of Buddhist iconography. Notice the intricate details, from the folds of the monastic robe to the serene expression on Buddha’s face. The halo surrounding his head signifies his enlightened state. The statue’s weight and substance convey a sense of stability and enduring wisdom.

Mythological Context and Narrative

The Bhumisparsha Mudra is directly tied to the events leading up to Buddha's enlightenment. While meditating under the Bodhi tree, Siddhartha was challenged by Mara, the demon of illusion and temptation, who sought to prevent him from achieving enlightenment. Mara unleashed his armies and tempting visions to break Siddhartha’s focus. Undeterred, Siddhartha remained steadfast in his meditation. When Mara questioned his right to attain enlightenment, Siddhartha reached down and touched the earth with his right hand, calling upon the earth goddess Sthavara to bear witness to his countless lifetimes of good deeds and spiritual practice that qualified him to reach Buddhahood. Sthavara appeared and testified to Siddhartha's worthiness, causing Mara and his forces to flee in disarray. This act of touching the earth is not merely a symbolic gesture; it's a pivotal moment of validation, proving that enlightenment is not granted but earned through dedication and selfless actions.

A Statement of Peace and Steadfastness

The inclusion of the lotus base, the swans and mythological celestial beings add to the spiritual significance of this art piece. This statue invites contemplation and inner peace. Its presence serves as a constant reminder of the potential for enlightenment within each of us, and the strength that comes from unwavering focus and the courage to overcome obstacles.
