A neatly gathered Ganesha murti. Seated on an ornate, multi-tiered plinth. It is a compact, longline composition wherein the plinth is almost half the size of the overall composition. It would look great poised within the portable in-home or -office temple of the modern-day devotee.

It is a glistening, smoothly sculpted composition. The iconography is typical - four arms, chubby child’s form constrained by the body of a snake - yet there is a hint of wrath on the brow of the side-turned face. Framing the subtly wrathful upper body is a network of vine. It is perfectly symmetrical and features the decidedly wrathful Kirtimukham at the zenith.

The plinth on which this Ganesha sculpture is placed is exceptional. It has a thick, ornamental sprig of vine down the frontal midline. Lotus petal engravings along the edges. Finally an upturned lotus bloom with elongated petals, which directly cradles the seated divinity.

The Remover of Obstacles

In the vast tapestry of Hindu deities, few are as beloved and widely revered as Lord Ganesha. Known by many names – Vinayaka, Ganapati, and Ekadanta among them – Ganesha is instantly recognizable by his elephant head, large belly, and often, his four arms. He is the embodiment of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune, and perhaps most famously, the remover of obstacles. Before embarking on any new venture, whether it be a journey, a business deal, or even the writing of a book, it is customary to invoke Ganesha, seeking his blessings to ensure success and a smooth path forward. The origin stories of Lord Ganesha are as varied and fascinating as the deity himself. One popular tale recounts how Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, created Ganesha from the sandalwood paste she used for bathing. She instructed him to guard the entrance to her chambers while she bathed. When Shiva returned, Ganesha, not recognizing him, refused him entry. A fierce battle ensued, and in his divine rage, Shiva severed Ganesha's head. Parvati, distraught at the loss of her son, pleaded with Shiva to restore him. Overcome with remorse, Shiva instructed his followers to bring him the head of the first creature they encountered facing north. They returned with the head of an elephant, which Shiva then attached to Ganesha, bringing him back to life. Shiva also declared that Ganesha would be worshipped before all other gods.

Auspicious Iconography

This meticulously crafted brass statue captures the essence of Lord Ganesha in his Chaturbhuja form, meaning "four-armed." Each hand holds significant symbolic objects that represent his divine power and blessings. One hand often holds a modak, a sweet dumpling, symbolizing the sweetness of liberation and the rewards of spiritual practice. Another may carry an ankusa (goad), representing his ability to control the mind and steer devotees towards righteousness. A pasha (noose) in another hand signifies his power to bind and remove obstacles. The fourth hand is often held in the varada mudra, a gesture of blessing and granting wishes. Seated on a high and intricately detailed pedestal, Lord Ganesha exudes an aura of regal serenity. The pedestal itself is a work of art, showcasing traditional motifs and patterns that reflect the rich artistic heritage of India. The statue is further enhanced by a kirtimukha above Ganesha's head. The Kirtimukha, or "face of glory," is a fearsome face that is often depicted above doorways and on temples. It is a powerful symbol that is believed to ward off evil and protect the sacred space. It reminds us that even negativity can be transformed into something beautiful and protective.

A Treasure of Brass and Blessing

This 20-inch brass statue is a testament to the skill and artistry of traditional Indian craftsmen. Brass, a metal revered for its durability and auspicious properties, has been used for centuries in the creation of sacred objects. The statue boasts dimensions of 20.0 x 10.0 x 9.0 inches, making it a commanding and eye-catching centerpiece for any altar, meditation space, or home. Whether you are a devout follower of Ganesha or simply appreciate the beauty and symbolism of Hindu art, this statue is a valuable addition to any collection. Invite the blessings of Lord Ganesha into your life and experience the remover of obstacles gracing your space.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
