The homa or havana of Hinduism is a votive ritual. It is performed by lighting a fire within a kunda, into which ghee, seeds, incense, and milk are poured. It must be noted that the elements which are consumed by the fire are of particular significance to the grihastha or householder. A havana is a necessary and sufficient responsibility of the successful grihastha.

‘Kunda’ is the vernacular term for the vessel within which the homagni (‘agni’ means fire) is lit. The one that you see on this page is a brass havana-kunda. It is quadrilateral in shape and forms three tiers, three and some of its multiples being a holy number in Hinduism.

A well-made havana-kunda such as this is indispensable to the duteous grihastha. It would be useful in private rituals conducted for the well-being of your immediate family, as well as in poojas and weddings. The smooth, highly polished finish of pure brass would add to the glamour of your homa.

The Sacred Hearth: A Vessel of Divine Offerings

This exquisite Havana Kunda, meticulously crafted from pure brass, is more than just a ritualistic vessel; it is a portal to the ancient traditions of Hindu worship. The Kunda, or fire pit, is central to the Yajña, a sacred Vedic ritual involving the offering of ghee, grains, and other sacred materials into a consecrated fire. These offerings are not merely symbolic; they are believed to appease deities, purify the environment, and invoke blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual growth. The very act of tending the sacred fire is a form of meditation, connecting the practitioner to the elemental forces and the divine presence.

Echoes of Mythology and Tradition

The practice of fire rituals dates back to the Vedic period, an era steeped in rich mythology and spiritual inquiry. Ancient texts, such as the Rigveda, describe the importance of Agni, the god of fire, who acts as the intermediary between humans and the gods. Agni is revered as a messenger, carrying prayers and offerings to the celestial realms. The design of the Kunda itself often carries symbolic meaning, with its tiered structure possibly representing different planes of existence or the layers of consciousness. The warm, lustrous glow of brass further enhances the sacred ambiance, as brass is considered a sattvic material, believed to promote purity and spiritual harmony.

Artistry and Devotion: A Handmade Masterpiece

Each aspect of this Havana Kunda speaks of dedication and skilled craftsmanship. Handmade in India, a land where artistry is deeply interwoven with spirituality, this piece is a testament to generations of inherited knowledge and devotion. The smooth, polished surfaces and the precise angles of its tiered design are not merely aesthetic features but are born from a profound understanding of its ceremonial purpose. The choice of brass, a metal known for its durability and auspicious associations, ensures that this Kunda will serve as a cherished centerpiece for countless pujas and yajñas for years to come, radiating its divine energy through your sacred space. This Kunda is an invitation to partake in the timeless rituals that have nurtured the spiritual heart of India for millennia.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
