Though Nataraja is popularized the world over by Chola bronzes, this Nepalese Nataraja murti is a stunning vision of the dancing Shiva. The floral-patterned platform of Shiva is a lotus pedestal, on which an innocent-faced Shiva, with a youthful appearance, dances in his four-armed form. His eyes are active, his face round, his dhoti adorned with the “Om” symbol, his feet ornamented with anklets and Apasmara under his feet is relatively feeble- all attributes transformed to match the tone of Nepalese artwork. Brimming with dynamism, this is a rare Nataraja icon for a Shiva bhakta.

The Cosmic Dance of Creation and Destruction

Behold the magnificent Nataraja, a representation of Lord Shiva in his form as the cosmic dancer, a powerful symbol of the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. This exquisite brass statue, meticulously crafted in Nepal, captures the divine energy and profound symbolism of this revered deity. The dance of Nataraja, known as the Tandava, is not merely a physical act but a metaphysical manifestation of the universe's constant flux. It is the rhythm that pulsates through all existence, from the smallest atom to the grandest galaxy. The statue depicts Shiva poised in a dynamic dance, his limbs conveying both fierce power and graceful fluidity. His right hand holds the *damaru*, a small hourglass-shaped drum, the sound of which symbolizes the creation of the universe. The rhythm of the drumbeat is the primal sound from which all existence emanates. In his upper left hand, he holds *agni*, the eternal flame of destruction, which signifies the dissolution of the universe at the end of each cosmic cycle, paving the way for renewal.

Symbolism Within the Dance

The legend goes that Shiva performed the Tandava to quell the arrogance of demons and to bless his devotees. He dances within a circle of flames, the *prabhamandala*, representing the cosmos itself, an ever-expanding and contracting universe. This fiery halo signifies the continuous nature of time and space, and the boundless energy that fuels it. His raised left foot crushes the demon *Apasmara* (also known as *Muyalaka*), the personification of ignorance and ego. This act symbolizes Shiva's victory over illusion and the triumph of knowledge and spiritual awareness. The calm, serene expression on Shiva's face, even amidst the energetic dance and surrounded by flames, reflects his detachment from the material world and his mastery over the forces of nature. The snakes coiled around Shiva's neck and arms are powerful symbols. They represent the primal energy of *kundalini* that lies dormant in every individual, and which can be awakened through spiritual discipline to achieve enlightenment. His flowing hair, depicted in elaborate locks, symbolizes the spread of his divine power and his connection to the sacred rivers, particularly the Ganges.

A Masterpiece from Nepal

This substantial statue, cast from high-quality brass, is a testament to the artisanal skill and spiritual devotion of Nepalese craftsmen. The intricate detailing, from the delicate ornamentation on Shiva's attire and jewelry to the swirling patterns within the cosmic circle, showcases a rich tradition of metalwork passed down through generations. Each curve and contour is thoughtfully rendered, imbuing the figure with a sense of divine presence and monumental grandeur. Displaying this Nataraja statue in your home or sacred space invites the blessings of Shiva, fostering an atmosphere of cosmic balance, creative energy, and the wisdom to transcend ignorance. It serves as a constant reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the potential for transformation that lies within us all.
