Varaha, the mighty boar has been an ancient manifestation of supreme power in Indian culture. From the Vedas to Puranas and artworks of early India- Varaha is synonymous with power, regalia, and divinity.

One of the most iconic moments of the great boar is in the legend of Vishnu’s Varaha avatar, where he salvages Bhu Devi (goddess earth) from the dark depths of the underworld.

From Gupta temples to Chola bronzes, this epic episode of Varaha has been recreated as the Bhu-Varaha theme.

Standing in the warrior’s “Alidha” pose, which showcases the strength and beauty of his physique, adorned with exquisite ornaments with Bhudevi as the most beautiful woman reclining on his shoulder- Varaha in this composition is the vision of an ideal monarch.

The size of the serpent Shesha and goddess Bhudevi in comparison with the gigantic Varaha highlights the cosmic form of the avatar.

A contrast to the firmness of Varaha's pose is his gracefully positioned hand and feet, just touching Shesha's hood and infusing valor with allure.

The Embodiment of Divine Rescue

Behold a meticulously crafted bronze sculpture, a testament to the enduring tales of Hindu mythology. This statue depicts Varaha, the boar-headed avatar of Lord Vishnu, poised in a powerful stance, rescuing Bhudevi, the Earth goddess. Varaha is one of the ten principal avatars of Vishnu, each representing a divine intervention to restore cosmic order and balance. The bronze medium beautifully captures the raw strength and compassionate nature of this incarnation. The image of Varaha evokes the ancient narrative where the demon Hiranyaksha plunged the Earth into the cosmic ocean, threatening to destroy it. Moved by the pleas of the Devas, Vishnu assumed the form of Varaha, a colossal boar, and descended into the depths. After a fierce battle with the demon, Varaha triumphantly lifted Bhudevi from the waters, restoring her to her rightful place in the universe. This act symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and the perpetual protection afforded by the divine.

Iconography and Artistry

This awe-inspiring piece stands at 24 inches tall, 15 inches wide and 7 inches in depth. Cast in bronze, also known as Panchaloha for its blend of five metals, this statue showcases the traditional methods of bronze sculpture. You’ll notice the intricate detailing on the adornments of both deities, the muscular form of Varaha, and the serene expression of Bhudevi. These details are all handcrafted by artisans trained in ancient techniques passed down through generations. Varaha is depicted with four arms, a common representation of Vishnu's divine power. In one hand he holds the Sudarshan Chakra, a spinning, disc-like weapon with 108 serrated edges, which is indicative of the omnipotence of the deity. The other arm is posed in a gesture of protection, bestowing blessings upon devotees. Bhudevi, seated gracefully on Varaha’s shoulder, holds a lotus. The lotus flower signifies purity, enlightenment, and spiritual awakening. The base features intricate lotus petal carvings, symbolizing purity and spiritual growth. Note the symbolic serpent beneath his foot, a reference to the primordial serpent that supports the foundation of reality. The statue captures Varaha's dynamism as he emerges from the cosmic waters, restoring balance to the world. The artistry lies not only in the depiction of divine forms, but also in the capturing of their essence, and the telling of their story. This statue is more than a mere representation; it's a celebration of faith, history, and the enduring power of art. A timeless reminder of courage, protection, and the eternal dance between good and evil.
