This awe-inspiring marble statue depicts the mighty Tantric Matrika (mother goddess) Varahi, in her Satwik aspect, known as “Shweta Varahi” or White Varahi. Associated with Sri Vishnu as his Shakti (Lakshmi) and Devi Durga as her commander-in-chief, goddess Varahi is represented as a heavenly female form, adorned with a crescent-moon crown, two-stringed necklace, bracelets, and a waistbelt. The boar-faced goddess has a discernible grin on her face, which lends this marble sculpture a stunning sense of animation. Her bosoms and waist have hints of plumpness, signifying her association with virtues of fecundity and fertility as a powerful mother goddess. With one hand raised in Abhaya Mudra and the other holding a skull cup, goddess Varahi’s reign on the battlefield is visually reinstated in this vintage artwork.

The Divine Boar-Faced Mother

Behold a captivating representation of Varahi, one of the Matrikas, the divine mothers of Hinduism. This striking bust, crafted from cool, smooth marble, captures the fierce yet nurturing aspect of this powerful goddess. Varahi, an embodiment of the divine sow, is associated with the boar avatar of Vishnu, Lord Varaha, who is famed for rescuing the Earth from the depths of the cosmic ocean. In this exquisite rendition, the artist has masterfully sculpted her distinctive porcine features, giving her a visage that is both formidable and strangely endearing. The serene expression, coupled with the subtle smile playing on her lips, invites contemplation. Adorned with elaborate necklaces and bracelets, her upper body is depicted with a sensuous fluidity that speaks to her maternal and protective nature. One hand gracefully cradles an object, perhaps representing the bounty and nourishment she bestows, while the other is raised in a gesture of blessing or assurance. The marble itself, with its inherent luminescence and subtle variations in tone, imbues the sculpture with an aura of ancient divinity. ––––––––––––––––––––

A Symbol of Protection and Power

Varahi is revered as a protector of the weak and a destroyer of evil forces. She is often invoked for courage, strength, and the removal of obstacles. In tantric traditions, she is considered a powerful energy that can transform negative energies into positive ones. The Matrikas themselves are a group of seven or eight mother goddesses, each representing a shakti, or divine feminine energy, derived from the principal deities of the Hindu pantheon. Their collective power is immense, offering protection and prosperity to their devotees. The presence of a boar's head is significant, symbolizing the earth and fertility, as well as the ability to dig deep and unearth hidden truths. This sculpture, therefore, speaks to the multifaceted nature of the divine feminine – capable of both fierce protection and nurturing abundance. The weathered, richly carved wooden stand provides a grounding contrast to the ethereal quality of the marble, suggesting a connection to the earthly realm and the enduring strength of tradition. This piece transcends mere decoration; it is a conduit to ancient wisdom and potent spiritual energy, an artifact that can bring a unique and powerful presence to any space.
