Embodiment of Compassion and Swift Action

This magnificent hand-carved camphor wood sculpture, a testament to the artisanal skill of Nepal, depicts the revered Goddess Green Tara. In the Indo-Tibetan tradition of Buddhism, Green Tara is a beloved female Buddha, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. She is known as the Mother of Liberation, a swift and active protector who hears the cries of all sentient beings and liberates them from suffering and fear. Her verdant hue symbolizes her youthful energy, vibrant life, and the flourishing of all beings. The intricate detailing of this piece captures the essence of Tara's compassionate nature. She is depicted seated in the lotus posture, with her right leg extended, signifying her readiness to descend and offer assistance. Her left hand, in the gesture of refuge, holds the stem of a lotus flower, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. Surrounding her is a symphony of miniature figures and celestial beings, each rendered with remarkable precision. These represent the countless disciples, deities, and protectors who embody the vastness of the Buddhist cosmos and assist Tara in her benevolent mission.

A Realm of Divine Presence

The tiered structure of this sculpture is reminiscent of a mandala or a celestial palace, housing a multitude of enlightened beings. Each niche is meticulously carved, showcasing figures in various meditative poses and devotional gestures. The vibrant colors, though softened by time and the patina of age, still evoke a sense of spiritual power and divine presence. The use of camphor wood, known for its aromatic properties and resistance to insects, ensures the longevity of this sacred artifact, carrying forward the wisdom and compassion of the ages. This piece is not merely a statue; it is a portal to a realm of divine protection and spiritual awakening, a tangible connection to the timeless wisdom of the Buddhist faith, originating from the heart of the Himalayas.

Echoes of Ancient Lore

Green Tara is often invoked in times of peril, and legends speak of her miraculous interventions. One popular tale recounts how Avalokiteshvara wept tears of compassion for the suffering of the world, and from his tears, Tara emerged, vowing to alleviate all fears and sorrows. Another myth tells of her manifestation from the sun and the moon, embodying both the radiant light of wisdom and the serene luminescence of compassion. Her twenty-one emanations, each with their unique attributes and colors, further illustrate her multifaceted nature and her ability to adapt to the needs of all beings. This sculpture, with its rich iconography and masterful craftsmanship, serves as a powerful reminder of these ancient stories and the enduring power of devotion.
