3'' Hayagreeva Incarnation of Lord Vishnu | Madhuchista Vidhana (Lost-Wax) | Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai

$207
Includes any tariffs and taxes

This easily portable ‘madhuchista vidhana’ or lost wax bronze image comes to us from the region of Swamimalai and evokes the wonderful skill of our traditional fine arts. As the god embodiment of knowledge and wisdom, this ‘panchaloha’ image is of the avatar of Vishnu known as Hayagreeva. As the half horse half man form, his presence is brilliantly captured by the ‘sthapati,’ who has presented Hayagreeva seated in the yogic ‘padamasana’ posture. His four armed form carries Vaishnavite symbols, and, importantly, the Vedas in his lower left hand while the lower right is raised in the fear dispelling ‘abhaya mudra.’ The association of Hayagreeva with the Vedas remarks the triumph of knowledge and righteous action to the path of dharma. While the legend of Hayagreeva has presented him in a powerful and fierce form of appearing on a large chariot and drawing powers from several gods, in this aesthetic creation, we see a benign and benevolent Hayagreeva, shining in lustrous bronze plating, with ornamentations across his body right up to his ‘mukuta.’ This conveniently mobile image is easily accessible by the Vaishnavite devotee, who can place it in its household or carry it otherwise.

The Equine Incarnation: Embodiment of Wisdom and Power

This exquisite Panchaloha bronze sculpture captures the divine form of Hayagreeva, a powerful and revered incarnation of Lord Vishnu. With the head of a horse and the body of a human, Hayagreeva is the epitome of wisdom, knowledge, and eloquence. This divine being is credited with the preservation of the Vedas and is invoked for intellectual prowess, academic success, and the acquisition of profound knowledge. In Hindu mythology, the story of Hayagreeva's emergence is often linked to a time when demons stole the sacred Vedas. Lord Vishnu, in his infinite compassion and power, assumed this magnificent form to retrieve the scriptures, vanquishing the darkness of ignorance with the brilliance of divine wisdom. ––––––––––––––––––

A Legacy of Craftsmanship: Swamimalai Bronze Artistry

Crafted using the ancient Madhuchista Vidhana, also known as the lost-wax casting technique, this sculpture is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Swamimalai, a renowned center for bronze casting in South India. The Panchaloha metal, a sacred alloy of five metals – gold, silver, copper, tin, and iron – is believed to possess auspicious properties, enhancing the spiritual energy of the idol. This meticulous process, passed down through generations of skilled artisans, involves creating a wax model, encasing it in clay, and then melting the wax away to create a hollow mold. Molten bronze is then poured into this cavity, resulting in a flawless and detailed representation of the deity. The intricate ornamentation, the serene expression, and the divine posture all speak to the mastery of the craftsmen. ––––––––––––––––––

Symbolism and Divine Presence

Hayagreeva is often depicted with four arms, each holding significant objects that symbolize his divine attributes. He is typically shown holding the Vedas, representing knowledge; a discus (Sudarshana Chakra), symbolizing his power to protect and destroy evil; a conch shell (Shankha), signifying the primordial sound of creation; and sometimes a rosary or a mace. His horse-like head signifies his untamed power and swiftness in delivering justice and knowledge. The serene yet powerful demeanor of Hayagreeva in this sculpture invites contemplation and spiritual connection, making it an ideal piece for prayer rooms, meditation spaces, or as a distinguished decorative item that radiates divine blessings and intellectual energy. This compact yet powerful rendition is perfect for any altar or sacred space, bringing the potent presence of wisdom and divine protection into your home.
