Mahabali, thinking it was a trivial request, readily agreed. Then, in a breathtaking display of his true form, Vamana grew to gigantic proportions. With one stride, he covered the Earth. With the second, he spanned the heavens. Having nowhere to place his third step, Mahabali humbly offered his own head. Pleased with Mahabali's devotion and integrity, Vishnu blessed him, allowing him to rule the netherworld (Patala) and granting him the boon of returning to Earth once a year during Onam, a festival celebrated with great fervor in Kerala, India.
