In India, ‘kanoon andha hai’ is a timeless adage. From the Hindi, it translates to the fact that the law (‘kanoon’) is (‘hai’) blind (‘andha’); an equivalent of the saying that justice is blind. The image of justice personified as a sturdy young woman treading upon snakes, blindfolded, holding up a pair of scales, is as timeless as the adage.

The lady-of-justice sculpture that you see on this page is made from pure brass. Her long, slender form is clad in a robe flowing seductively in the wind. In her right hand, a walking stick as skinny as she; in the left, of course, the scales.

The most interesting aspect of the lady-of-justice is how she is incapable of viewing the scales and forming the kind of judgement that is informed by intuition. The idea is that, in order to mete out justice, the law has nothing beyond the cold, hard, often insufficient truth.

This striking work is sure to be a captivating focal point in any room, sparking conversation and contemplation.

The Enduring Legacy of Justice

The image of the Lady of Justice, often referred to as Justitia, has roots stretching back to ancient civilizations. The earliest representations can be traced to ancient Egypt, where Ma'at was the goddess of truth, balance, and order. She was often depicted with an ostrich feather representing truth, which was weighed against the heart of the deceased to determine their worthiness to enter the afterlife. Similarly, in ancient Greece, Themis, the personification of divine law and order, and her daughter Dike, the spirit of justice, held roles of great importance. Dike was tasked with upholding moral order and ensuring that actions aligned with the will of the gods. The Roman interpretation, Justitia, borrowed heavily from these earlier figures. The symbols associated with her—the scales, the sword, and the blindfold—each carry profound symbolic weight, representing the core tenets of a fair and impartial legal system.

Symbols of Impartiality and Authority

The blindfold is perhaps the most recognizable symbol, signifying impartiality and the principle that justice should be blind to wealth, power, or any other external influence. The scales represent the careful weighing of evidence, ensuring that decisions are based on merit and reason. The sword symbolizes authority and the power to enforce the law, but also represents the potential for justice to be swift and decisive. Furthermore, the serpent crushed beneath her feet is a potent symbol of the triumph of justice over evil and corruption. This statue is a powerful reminder of the ideals to which we aspire in the pursuit of a fair and equitable society.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
