A superfine bronze of the Hoysala period. Refers to the art-loving ruling dynasty of the 10th through 14th centuries, under whose patronisation flourished the great bronze sculptures of the South. The work that you see on this page is a contemporary reproduction of the iconography and aesthetics of those times.

It depicts the rare dancing Sarasvati. While She strums on the veena in Her anterior hands, Her feet are in the dancing stance: knees bent outwards, the left foot turned outwards, and the right one raised at a sharp angle above it. The slender dancing figure, however, comprises just half the stature of the composition.

Underneath is an upturned lotus pedestal and a lotus-petal plinth with hollow petals. A pair of ashvayali on either side, from the tops of which rises an elongated Kirtimukham archway in true Hoysala style.

The Art of Hoysala Bronze

The statue is cast in Hoysala Bronze, a technique known for its exquisite detail and rich, warm tones. Originating in the Hoysala Empire of South India (11th-14th centuries), this lost-wax casting method involves meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in sculptures of exceptional quality and beauty. The deep, dark tones of the bronze, subtly highlighted by the careful detailing, evoke a sense of age and history, making each piece unique and imbued with the spirit of its creators. The flowing lines and dynamic posture of the Goddess are a testament to the skill of the artisans who have continued this ancient tradition for centuries. This dedication to time-honored techniques is evident in every curve and detail.

Saraswati: The River of Consciousness

In Hindu mythology, Saraswati is often depicted as flowing like a river, symbolizing the ceaseless flow of knowledge and wisdom. Her name itself translates to "the one who possesses knowledge," connecting her to the very essence of learning and enlightenment. She is often portrayed seated near a river, or sometimes even emerging from it, highlighting her connection to the source of all creation and the boundless nature of knowledge. The swan, her sacred mount, further symbolizes her ability to discern truth from falsehood. This statue beautifully captures the fluidity of her form, reflecting the constant movement and ever-expanding nature of wisdom.
