Lord Krishna on completing his education under his teacher Sandipani asked him what he wanted as Guru-Dakshina (a gift given as a token of thanks to one’s teacher). His master then told him about Shankhasur, a demon living inside a massive conch shell who had abducted his son. Krishna rescued Sandipani’s son by battling Shankhasur, defeated him, and kept his hideout, the Shankha for himself. This conch shell was named Panchajanya, one of the four attributes associated with Lord Vishnu.

A young Krishna sits on the top of the conch, happily playing his flute. With his hair secured at the top, a few locks falling on his forehead which is adorned by a Tilak (auspicious mark), and a short dhoti, Sri Krishna looks exceedingly adorable. Panchajanya represents his control over five categories of living beings and their senses. The contradiction in the profoundness of Panchajanya ruled by the uncomplicated innocence of Krishna symbolizes the effortlessness with which the preserver of the universe runs the intricate functions of the world.
